GIS for Civil Engineering
(ws-gis-ce-01) Set up QGIS projects, interrogate civil infrastructure data and produce clear, professional maps and spatial outputs for real-world engineering work.
About This Workshop
This workshop is designed to help civil engineers, designers and technical professionals develop a practical understanding of Geographic Information Systems using QGIS. It addresses the common challenges associated with importing, interpreting, managing and presenting spatial data, with a clear focus on the practical workflows required to set up QGIS projects, interrogate civil engineering datasets and produce clear, fit-for-purpose maps. Through concise lessons, guided demonstrations and practical activities, participants will learn how to: • Navigate the QGIS interface and configure useful plugins • Select an appropriate coordinate reference system and import spatial data • Interrogate raster and vector datasets used in civil engineering projects • Work with stormwater, sewer, water, property, aerial imagery and LiDAR datasets • Apply suitable symbology to differentiate infrastructure and terrain information • Create dynamic labels using attributes and expressions • Create customised maps (no drafting required!) • Produce consistent maps and spatial outputs for design, coordination and reporting The workshop provides a practical GIS workflow for creating clear, professional maps without relying on drafting software, supporting site planning, project due diligence, bid preparation and early project decision-making.
