QGIS Open Data
(ws-gis-ce-02) Access, connect and interpret open spatial data in QGIS to support civil engineering investigations, feasibility assessments and concept planning.
About This Workshop
This workshop is designed to help civil engineers, designers, planners and technical professionals develop a practical understanding of accessing and using open spatial data within QGIS. It addresses the common challenges associated with finding authoritative datasets, connecting to live spatial services and interpreting elevation and contextual information, with a clear focus on the practical workflows required to support early-stage engineering investigations and concept development. Through concise lessons, guided demonstrations and practical activities, participants will learn how to: • Understand what open spatial data is and how it can support civil engineering work • Identify appropriate uses and limitations of publicly available datasets • Connect QGIS projects to live datasets (stream GIS data straight into your projects!) • Access and display GIS data all across Australia • Obtain Australia-wide elevation (terrain) data • Apply symbology to visualise terrain and other spatial information • Use open data responsibly for constraint mapping, feasibility studies and concept planning The workshop provides a practical workflow for accessing and streaming extensive spatial data from across Australia, including topography, services and planning overlays, directly into QGIS to support site investigations, due diligence and early project decisions.
