Stormwater: Inlet Design
(ws-sw-urb-02) Develop and justify a stormwater inlet layout by assessing surface-flow paths, assessing road-flow conditions, sizing sag and on-grade inlets, and carrying bypass flow downstream.
About This Workshop
This workshop is designed to help civil engineers, designers and technical reviewers develop a practical understanding of stormwater inlet layout and inlet hydraulic design. It addresses the common challenges associated with interpreting surface-flow paths, locating stormwater inlets, assessing road-flow safety and accounting for inlet bypass, with a clear focus on the engineering fundamentals, design inputs, calculations and decisions required to develop and review a coordinated stormwater inlet system. Through concise lessons, worked examples and practical activities, participants will learn how to: • Interpret contours, road grades, lot grading and overland-flow paths • Establish preliminary sag and on-grade inlet locations • Define local inlet catchments and calculate approach flows • Distinguish between catchment flow, approach flow, captured flow and bypass flow • Calculate road-flow width, depth, velocity and hazard using the half-road method • Apply surface-flow limits and identify when an inlet layout must be revised • Use hydraulic capture charts to size sag and on-grade inlets • Carry bypass flow downstream and justify the completed inlet layout The workshop is structured around a practical inlet design workflow that participants can use to hand-markup stormwater layouts, assess road-flow conditions and size inlets across a full stormwater network.
